I did Not know this and somebody asked so...
You can turn on email notifications under options, settings.
This is sweet since the versa does not do java for gmail mobile. But i don't see exactly how it let me know.
I sent mysef an email but got no notification, as far as I can tell. There is no email folder under messaging or anywhere else I could find. Any Ideas?
*Edit Ok it did work eventualy. With a loud and annoying beep it notified me. for some weird reason that loud beep caryed over when I opened the link to view the email. It kept beeping loudly ignoring my master volume setting every time I touched the screen in my email when its not usualy loud. anyone else have this happen?

Yeah, Notifications in Mobile Email as an alternative for Gmail.
Works apart from the BEEP! Is there a way to change tone for notifications?

. . . Is there a way to change tone for notifications?
Unfortunately not.
The only way to avoid it is to put to phone on vibrate.

It is abrupt & loud.
My Voyager made the exact same noise so I'm kind of use to it. I just schedule the notifications for hours during the day so it doesn't wake me.

Woodley, I set up Mobile EMail too - but the notifications come so slowly that I gave up.  Use the GMail Mobile link directly and it works just fine.  Same interface as a WAP phone, but personally fast = good, I don't need the fancy interface on my mobile device.

Here's the link I use to force the mobile/WAP version of GMail, it's smokin' fast:

Code:
http://mail.google.com/mail/x/?source=mobileproducts

You can also just set GMail to forward a copy of any incoming mail to your <yournumber>@vzwpix.com.  I like this a LOT better than Mobile EMail, the forwarding happens VERY fast and you get a good chunk of your inbound message in the forward.  This only makes sense if you have unlimited text, but it's pretty simple and works fine for me.  If I get a message that doesn't completely come thru, I just flip to the browser and read if it's important and can't wait until I get to my laptop.

I actually set up a GMail filter to forward only messages from certain senders or containing certain content.  I don't personally need a text every time Newegg or REI send me a sales flyer email, but from certain folks, eBay, PayPal, etc. - they get forwarded to my phone.

If Mobile EMail works best for you, great - just thought I'd throw out another option.

Dude thanks alot! I know I am not the only one who will benefit from this.
I will post again with a review of how well this works when I get it working!
EDIT*
It is smoking fast! I miss the features but i guess gmail has just spoiled me! I can't figure out how to get gmail to forward them through vzwpic.com could you post a TUT?

You're welcome!  Yes, it's fast isn't it?

Two ways to forward:

1) Go into GMail settings (upper right corner of the GMail mailbox screen) and click the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab."  Check the radio button to forward a copy of all mail to <yournumber>@vzwpix.com  (Note: Replace <yournumber> with your 10-digit cell number, no hyphens - and note it's specifically "vzwpix.com")

2) If you want only some of your mail to forward to your phone as an alert, you can create a filter.  You can filter by keywords in the subject, message body, or a specific email address (or list of email addresses).  You can find the "create a filter" link just to the right of the main GMail search box near the top of the page.  Once you've entered the filter criteria, click "next" and it will give you lots of options including the ability to forward to a specific address.

Works nice, I actually sometimes receive forwarded GMail on my phone BEFORE my Firefox GMail extension picks up the new mail.  Speedy for sure.  I chose the filter method, as I don't need a text every time I get a Newegg.com promo or my "Word A Day" email from Wordsmith.   Wink

Thanks, You get a cookie! YUM!

This is a much better option for email notification than using the Versas mobile email notification.
Not only do you not have to hear that annoying beep, its faster and you could even have your versa read it to you. So far I like it alot!

Excellent, glad it's working out for you and thanks for the cookie!   Grin

This all fits nicely on the Versa with the threaded messaging feature, as the GMail forwards don't clutter up your text in-box.  I had this same setup running a while ago on my old phone and it was much less easy to deal with.  Love that threaded messaging.

Uh! I'm kind of new at this so I don't know if it is common knowledge, but you can change the time you want to be notified of e-mails.
If you already have your email setup-
Go to Mobile E-mail
Select a mail account
select option (in the lower left hand corner)
scroll down to settings
Screen will pop up "Alert me for new messages"
select either "always", "never", "only during-"

A screen will pop-up when you get a message telling you which account you have on. If you have multiple accounts you will have to change the settings for each account. If you ignore the notification window it will still show a reminder, but you have to access the mobile e-mail window. A little message icon will pop up next to the account. I think the little icon is different depending on which service you use (Live, Yahoo, etc.) Grin
