As of original posting approximately here's the hacks for the versa:
Flash Game Replacement
Ringtone/Basic File adding

I think it's about time to go through the file system and start messing with it.

In the post below I'll write what's what in the file system as we figure it out etc.

       Can I brick my Versa?
I would assume it's possible. That's why you always back everything up. As long as you can get into the filesystem again you can fix it.

       How Do I Help?
Go into your Versa's filesystem and start playing with the files. Or check tasks below that need to be explored. Also don't post here just for kicks. Also feel free to just verify that you have the same files or check it against known lg file system breakdowns (if any exist).

        Tasks/Files to Investigate
                  ---All glowing files below
---Any file that can lead to custom themes
---Any file that allows betterment of the web browser
---Any file that allows editing of any screen
---Where the smart menu is kept
---Where the standard menu is kept

Great post! AWESOME title!
Do we have the right access and are we able to edit the right files to change anything cool that's not illegal so we can talk about it here? Or has Verizon locked us out? What are the things we can possibly change?

Basically just don't try to copy BREW software. Other than that I don't see why not.

If we're not stealing a paid service we're just adding functionality so I don't see why not.

I think we can change the theme and the different screens more so then they are already. I know the Verizon Ringtones App is very hackable but I see no reason to customise it. I don't know exactly what we can do that's why we're posting it here. I have been poking around the file system for a while but I can't figure out how to read the files or what to use to read them. So here's hoping we can find something!

If you take fileDB from the browser settings file and open it with a Hex editor and change the very last veriable on the bottom right hand side from .0. to .1. it will allow you to edit the programming menu which can be accessed by dialing ##program9600, pressing call and entering 000000 as the security code. Also, i sent my Versa into constant reboot by changing the homepage on the WAP settings and i cant get it out. My computer cannot access my filesystem. Anyone have any idea how to fix it?

Really? Changing the homepage on the wap? I did that in the browser settings and it did no damage. Not sure what you can do to fix this. Is the button on the bottom left of the battery a reset button?
Anyway thanks for the tip on how to edit the file systems now we just have to find files worth editing.
How did you find out that changing that variable allows you to edit the file systems?

I went through the filesystem and found something that I think relates to the theme. I can't remember what the file was called, but I'll look again and post it. It's almost completely written in gibberish, and I looked up the filetype, and saw that it's openable only with 1 program, so I downloaded that program (can't remember the name) and it said it couldn't open the 'theme' file I found Sad Quite a disappointment. There are, however, a ton of color hex codes in the word file, and I was in photoshop matching up the color codes to see if I could find any similarities to colors I saw in the phone menu, but to no avail. I'm afraid to change some of the color values for fear of bricking my phone.

Well good luck too bad someone does not have a broken one to experiment on. Would a minor change in the hex code brick the versa so bad it would not connect to bitpim to change it back?

Honestly there is no reason to go into the File system unless your looking to add one of the flash games in place of a current app.

The real thing that you should be working on is finding a way to add other brew applications to the VERSA, and its not illegal if you do non Verizon Applications the only legal ramification you face is voiding your warranty.

Yes, It sounds like some portion of your phones boot sequence has been affected or is corrupted do to the modification you made.  Therefore your phone is unable to startup or "boot" properly and/or completely. Due to the fact the the phone is in a rebooting loop, you can't just hook it up to your pc with its usb cable & remove the modification you made.  This is because you pc doesnt have enough time to recognize your phone & establish communication with it before the phone reboots over & over & over.

This is one of the "states" a phone is in when it is referred to as being "Bricked".

About your only option at this point is to put the phone into emergency boot mode so you can "flash" or program it back to the factory configuration.

This can be quite an involved process (unless you have a Valid Complete Backup of Your Entire Phone, not just your contacts & ringtones & stuff) & you will most likely loose "everything" on your phone, ie pics, contacts, ringtones, videos, games, etc. not to mention of the factory low level programming, which is basically your phones operating system.  It would be the same as if you did have windows installed on your pc, it would basicaly render it useless.  Unless you had Linux installed on it & new how to use Linux, Ha!

The first thing you would need to do is;

1.) Download and install the latest LG Usb Drivers for Windows on your pc.

2.) Connect a usb cable (the one that came with your phone or one that has the compatible usb connector for the Versa) to your pc.

3.) Remove your querty keyboard or back cover & remove your battery.

4.) While holding down the camera button (the button used to take photos) plug the other end of your usb cable into your phone.

5.) When you see the Emergency Mode screen on your phone, release the button.

The phone is now in Emergency Programming Mode, is ready to be programmed or "Flashed", is connected to your pc & should be recognized properly by your pc (you can verify this in device manager)

Unless you have the Valid Complete Backup of your Entire Phone I mentioned earlier, this is just a very small part of the entire process needed to get your phone working again. I will be happy to give you a list of what else you need & outline the rest of the process if you would like, just post a request.

Hope this Helps...  Undecided

as a newbie, i post here only to further this thread.

hempledan,

i have two humble questions for you as a versa owner:

1) can any changes be made in emergency boot mode that is not accessible in the service menu?  ...if, in fact, any changes can be made...?

2) how can one make a "valid complete backup" of one's entire phone?
