Title: My pros and cons of the LG versa
Post by: cobija on March 01, 2009, 06:29:44 PM
here are some pros and cons of what i have found with this phone with the 6 hrs i have had it for.

PROS

-Very responsive touchscreen ( i kept the protective casing till the actual protective screen comes and overall, works fine even though its kinda sticky)
- 3d "cube" style menu
- comes with three game demos that have unlimited uses (need for speed undercover, monopoly here and now, and pacman)
-the camera and its options
-accelerometer works in every menu except the home (placing this in the removable qwerty keyboard will achieve this). also the speed of the accelerometer is nice
-similar to above, you can turn the qwerty keyboard right and left, instead of on the dare only on the left
-Call quality
-volume of the speaker =) (0-16 and its pretty loud at 10)
-Battery life (like 290 hours of talk time and 18 days on standby ^_^)
-size
-CAMERA WITH FLASH!!!
-ability to text with music on

These are just a few pros i could come up with. now here are some cons:

CONS

-i do not like the leather material on the detachable keyboard
-when on the detachable keyboard you can only call the latest person you talked to (but easy solution would be to open phone, call person, and close the phone back)
-the detachable keyboard adds a lot more bulk than i would like.
-the space button on the detachable keyboard needs a little more pressure to push down its "sticky"
-stylus that comes in the box is totally pointless (imo)
-the camcorder does not pick up sound as well as i hoped
-the vibrate feels and sounds kinda cheap
-and even though its a new phone, i can not find where the themes are to change for this phone!

but overall, a very good buy. 9/10. the main problems are that its new so not everything is out yet. hope a software update will includes themes and whatnot. but the main problems are with the detachable keyboard.

I expected the keyboard to be a bit of a hassle, but the phone itself sound pretty cool. Thanks for this.

Your welcome. did you find any themes on your phone?

I don't have mine yet, I will get it when my 2 years is up. Don't hold me to this, but it should be in the settings and tools, display settings, then display themes. Unless you knew that, and you mean more themes.

well, the only options are banner, phone backlight, module backlight, wallpaper, charging screen, menu fonts, dial fonts, menu style (only options are grid menu and smart menu) and home screen order.

I don't think there is then. You can personalize the wallpapers though if you wish, And I take requests for sizing and all :) oh, and when you go to display themes->wallpapers, is there something along the lines of fun animations?

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa
Post by: cobija on March 01, 2009, 08:19:15 PM
under fun animations, theres world map and black box. i have the world map set as my lock screen. but thanks! if i ever need a custom sized picture, ill be sure to ask you  ;)

Okay, because there is something called flash clocks, something you can add to the phone if it has fun animations.

Big D, I think it would be 50-100$. I'm going to check that out for you next time I go to the mall. It depends on if they make it a voyager upgrade(i think is free) or a new phone for 100$

He's asking that if you had a 2 year contract, =which you can get a new phone after the 2 years run out,- how much did the phone cost (there would be a hundred or two off)

o its 250 with a 50$ mail in rebate

I used to have the Voyager, but upgraded to the Versa yesterday.   This phone is great.  It addressed 99% of all my peeves i had with the Voyager, and i'm very happy so far with the phone.

I'm very glad they changed to the new standard of Micro-USB for charging, which means i won't be breaking the the male end on the charging cable.

I'm not much of a texter anymore, so i really will probably never use the keypad.

All the below are from the perspective of a former Voyager User:

Biggest Faves:
* Media Shortcuts
* Favorites
* Shortcuts
* The TXT Message history grouped by Contact/Conversation
* The proximity sensor that locks and shuts off the display when talking, and unlocks when you pull it away from your face.  No more annoying phone getting locked while you trying to enter some digits when on an automated phone tree.
* The fresher looking interface
* No More sliding button on the side to lock/unlock the phone.  I love the new push button on the top.
* Over The Air software updates,  No more trips to verizon for the "hour long" process.
* How did i ever live without the accelerometer?
* RSS interface (Even though buried in bookmarks)
* Having a Flash Again,  although no flashlight mode.

Biggest Dissapointments:
* Be great if proximity sensor worked in pocket, or if you could disable most of the hard buttons on the phone to prevent accidental pocket dialing.
* Still a 2 MP camera, seriously??
* Seems like there are less apps for the phone in the GetItNow area
* Unlocking Via Screen should be a pattern not a simple Touch here.

How much did you get it for dspinner? So you would say it is a lot better then the voyager?

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa
Post by: dspinner on March 02, 2009, 11:31:33 AM
149.99, and then there is a 50 dollar mail in rebate.  so once i get that back, total cost will be 100.

I would say its a dramatic improvement on the voyagers interface and the ability to customize it some.  Although if you are a frequent texter, then it may be better for you to stay with the voyager or at least try the unit out in the store.  I'm happy to have a smaller phone that does almost everything i want.   And if i know i am going to be doing alot of txting or web browsing, it's nice to know i can attach the keyboard and accomplish more with it.   I dont think i'd ever leave the keyboard on for any extended a

How do you like the keyboard?  Yes, the UI is supposed to be updated customizable.

dspinner, where did you get it for 150$? the verizon store has it set as 250 with a 50 mail-in rebate.

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa

He got it as an upgrade, so it is 100 off.

what exactly do you mean by an "upgrade"? because i had a saumsung alias before this. isnt that an upgrade?

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa
Post by: Echo Moon on March 02, 2009, 09:29:03 PM
If you get a 2 year contract, when it is up and you renew it you have the chance to upgrade your phone or buy a new one for (usually) 100$

so you have the phone right, did you come from the Voyager?

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa
Post by: cobija on March 03, 2009, 07:10:17 PM
i have the phone and i came from the alias ;P

i was actually considering this phone, the dare, or the voyager. the sales person told me lg took all the good features of the voyager, dare, and the env2 and put it in this phone. if your contract is up in may, thats not too far away. the price will drop at least. also, that will give time to get some software updates so you will probably have themes and some fixes as well =)

Cobija...you get the extra $100 off if you are the master line.  In our family, I use the upgrade of my sister who is the master line and can get the LG Versa for $100.  Without it, I use my normal upgrade and get it for how much you paid for it.

oh verizon. tricky people.

LG Versa or LG Dare?! I can't decide!

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa
Post by: cobija on March 04, 2009, 05:46:19 PM
armo, i suggest one thing to you. go to the verizon store and do the following:

1. play with the LG dare - 5 minutes

2. play with the LG versa -  5 minutes

3. go ask a sales rep to help you out. basically, the sales rep told me lg took all the good things they liked from the dare, env2, and the voyager and put it in the versa. btw, versa has a way better responsive touch screen for one, and secondly, cooler UI. but the downside is that the versa has a 2.5mm headphone jack and a 2.0MP camera. but the 2.0MP has techonologies that make the picture look alot better. with the headphone jack, unless you dont have an ipod or mp3 player, is ok. plus, 2.5mm headphones are not that expensive. basically also, you have the option on the versa to have a pysical OR virtual qwerty keyboard. on the dare, its only virtual. hope this helped =)

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa
Post by: Echo Moon on March 04, 2009, 06:00:22 PM
I would suggest the Versa, like cobija said. I personally would not use the camera often, and a have a ton of 2.5mm headphones. The UI is more advanced, even if it just looks cooler. You can switch between shortcuts, home and favorites, which I think is cool. The phone will definitely be the one getting the updates, too, because verizon is going to want people to purchase this one instead of just updating there old voyagers and dares. I have heard rumors about new modules, too, like speakers, game modules and other things. I also hope that they will make a new qwerty keyboard attachment that looks better and has more use when it is closed.

one other thing to support for what echo moon said about updates for this phone is that people for the lg dare are STILL waiting for visual voicemail and guess what? that feature came with the versa on the first day =)

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa
Post by: big D on March 04, 2009, 11:29:12 PM
doesnt visual voicemail cost?

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa

2.99$ per month.

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa

what kind of apps does it have?

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa
Post by: TheArmoGuy on March 05, 2009, 01:27:14 PM
ooh..thanks guys.

Yaaah...I went to the verizon store and they couldn't help me too much...but after reading what you guys wrote and thinking for the past few days...I'm gonna get the versa.  Cooler phone...even though that qwerty is somewhat of a turnoff! Make cooler keyboard attachments verizon!

I'll let you know if I'm happy with my decision afterwards...excited though :)

visual voicemail should be free too...they need to work on that.

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa
Post by: cobija on March 05, 2009, 05:44:27 PM
well, they wouldnt just give it for free. everything comes at a price =)

btw, if you dont like it, like REALLY DONT, verizon has a 30-day refund. but since verizon charges for everything, its a 35$ fee to return it. better than a early contract termination

PROS:
-multitasking
-3d interface
-drawing pad
-menu flip like blackberry storm
-external screen on keyboard
CONS:
-only 2 buttons on external front
-space bar in middle unlike voyager on left and right  =(
-cant text on outside of qwerty
-cameras good but could be 3.2 or higher mp
-numeric keypad on touch is small to text on (wish you could get rid of the write button)

I would have to say the 2.0 Pixel and how you can't really change your theme color from anything other than the solid brown color are probably the biggest problems I can see with the phone. Other than that, I'm falling for the phone day in, day out.

Yes, everything does come at a price. And I would much rather return my phone for $35.00 instead of an early termination fee. Hopefully I wont even have to consider returning my phone when I get it in 9 Days (almost 8 days.) =)

My two biggest gripes about the Versa are the 2.5mm headset jack instead of a 3.5mm headphone jack and the inability to watch videos in full screen.

I'm fine with the headphone jack since I just use my $30 bluetooth headset anyways. I'll also be fine using the virtual qwerty since my fingers are so small. I'm happy to have a flash for my camera and a little spot to tie my charms on. My friend brought me some back from Japan and I've had to attach them to my Voyagers case all this time (or the useless antenna) lol. I can't wait to get it, hopefully on May 6th. Just need to come up with the what $150 + Tax. Then wait for my rebate. Then I have to scrape together some more $ to get the full version of CS4 now that my trail versions run out. Any one know what the Pixel Size of the screen is? Maybe I can hurry up and make some clocks for it on my remaining 9 days of the trail. :P

OK. So does anyone know if you can only have 10 contacts per group like the Voyager. I always hated that about the voyager. I think it's stupid to have a group called work and I can only put 10 of my 60 employees in it. WTF! Please test this out if you have the versa and let me know. I'm going to get it in a few weeks and I want to make sure it solves at least a few of my voyager problems.....or I may as well wait until one comes around that does and save the $100 towards the Flash CS4 program for now.

I don't know if you guys are against it or just don't know how, but it's really not that hard to get Flash CS4 for not $699.

I'm being really vague on purpose.

You can only send a message to up to 10 recipients at a time, so it makes perfect sense.

Title: Re: My pros and cons of the LG versa

That's a bummer. I don't even use the groupings to text people. I just like to identify my contacts, so when the (now ex) boyfriend was going through my phone he wouldn't freak out about 15 guys names in there (who were all coworkers).

If we knew how to ge CS4 for less than $700, we'd already have it. Unfortunatly my trail period ended before I could make any clocks for the Versa. I can't get my phone till next week so I wouldn't have been able to test them out anyways.

Yeah, finally got it. Okay so for anyone who's the main person on the line (and if you walk into a store in CA) it will be $192 up front (before the $50 mail in rebate). $150 for the phone and $42ish for CA taxes. Already having a great time with it. Can't wait to see what this baby can do. Still bummed I couldn't make flash clocks for it, not sure if they could be used as regular wallpapers anyways.
